Dear All,
As of this morning, we have 90 registered schools for the 2016 Decathlon. There are only 10 slots left. After we have 100 schools received, the next 5 schools will be placed on a waiting list. All others will be returned to the school. If we receive more than 10 mail in registrations in a day, then the school names will be put into a "drawing" for the last 10 spots and the 5 wait listed. Please remember that registrations will only be accepted by mail. Walk-ins will not be considered. Thank you everyone for your support of the 2016 AJHD. We are looking forward to this year's event!

2016 Decathlon Information

Our entire Executive Committee were very disheartened in August to receive a call about the Sports Arena's availability for the event coming this March 5, 2016. We were informed that we should start looking for another venue because the LA Football Club was taking control of the Sports Arena on March 1, 2015, and they had no system in place to rent the facility to us prior to the building being demolished to make way for a soccer stadium.

After calls to the Forum, the Los Angeles and Long Beach Convention Centers, the Honda Center, APU, the Galen Center, LMU and other colleges, the committee was unable to find any venue that can provide us with the space needed for the date we need: March 5, 2016.

Thankfully, we have been able to put a hold on the Walter Pyramid Center at Long Beach State for Sunday, March 13th. The managers of the Pyramid have been gracious in welcoming us and we are also able to book now for a first weekend in March for next year. This new venue can comfortably accommodate 100 decathlon teams; therefore, the first 100 school that register will be given priority registration.

Obviously, the event being held on a Sunday instead of the usual Saturday represents a change. Fortunately, as always, we are blessed to celebrate Mass together at this event each year. Perhaps the decathletes and their teacher coaches can be granted a “Decathlon Holiday” for Monday, March 14th.

Writing: There is an optional writing portion that is being piloted for the 2016 Decathlon.
Due to the large number of schools that participate, the decathlon committee plans to evaluate the process before it is included as part of the Decathlon competition in the future. The Archdiocese of Los Angeles will not be taking the writing portion of the Academic Decathlon in 2016.

Registration for the 2015 Academic Junior High Decathlon will begin October 8, 2014 and will end on February 2, 2015. Late registration will be returned to the school.

The 2015 Academic Junior High Decathlon will be held at the Los Angeles Sports Arena which can accommodate all Los Angeles Catholic schools that wish to participate in this event. Team numbers will be assigned in the order registration is received and processed.
Each registered and participating school will receive 15 wristbands at no charge: 10 for the decathletes, 1 for the head coach, 1 for the principal, 1 for the pastor, 2 for the proctors (these will be given at the Mandatory Proctor’s Meeting). Each school will provide 2 volunteers and wristbands will be given by the floor coordinator on the actual day of set-up. Additional wristbands will be made available for an additional charge. Registered schools will receive information on purchasing wristbands in December. Every participating school is encouraged to purchase an ad in the souvenir booklet in support of the AJHD program. Proceeds from ads and wristbands help cover AJHD expenses. You may also ask businesses in your community to support your school and become involved in promoting academic excellence.
The Academic Junior High Decathlon’s participants and spectators are guests of The Los Angeles Sports Arena. All persons in attendance are subject to the policies, rules, and regulations of the Sports Arena. These policies will be sent to registered schools before the event. It is imperative that the school principal communicates these policies to all coaches, staff, parents, participants, and spectators. There will be mandatory proctor meetings that will be held as we come closer to the event on
Tuesday February 24, 1:30-2:30 PM at St. Euphrasia OR Thursday February 19, 1:30-2:30 PM at Cathedral Chapel School.

Your registration is our contract agreement that you have read and agree to abide by the policies of the Junior High Academic Decathlon. All participating schools are to follow the Code of Conduct stipulated in the Archdiocesan handbook. The AJHD Committee has determined that schools not complying with the policies will face immediate elimination from the Decathlon. Thank you for your understanding and your support of this wonderful event for the schools, students, and families in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

Proctors will be receiving the envelope that has all necessary materials, including wristbands at the Mandatory Proctors Meeting 1:30-2:30 on February 24 (St. Euphrasia) or February 19 (Cathedral Chapel).

  1. School uniforms are required – this means that you may have a T-shirt, polo shirt, or AJHD school sweatshirt.
  2. The restriction on your school color is that it cannot be a neon color (The color palette of primary and secondary colors is a positive and recommended choice to make for all teams). Shirts must have mid-length sleeves. This means t-shirt or polo sleeve length. Tank top or sleeveless styles are prohibited.
  3. Text on the shirts is limited to your school name, your school mascot (i.e. St. Dymphna Lions), and the name(s) of your decathlon team member(s).
  4. Uniform school pants/skirts/skorts are required. Shorts are prohibited. Think “Mass Dress Uniform” and this will help all of your decathletes understand the dress code guidelines.
  5. Shoes must be “uniform type” (no flip flops, sandals, etc.). Shoes must be close-toed and backs.
There are no exceptions to the above. Decathletes should dress in a way that is respectful to all competitors.

Thank you one and all for your cooperation with the above policies. These were in place for the 2012 event and we received positive comments about a stricter “uniform” policy. We are proud of our schools and our decathletes and we are looking forward to a great 2015 event during the Year of Faith.
